GSZ is certainly a Legacy staple - the tutor package is one of the proven and reliable building stones of the format, similar to sol lands with chalice, ponder+brainstorm+force and loam + mox diamond. I am probably forgetting about a few other decks that also run it. The first two are very competitive decks, the latter a popular but weaker deck in the format. I think GSZ sees play in Legacy Elves, 4c Loam and Maverick. I would be extremely surprised if Amulet Titan plays this card since the deck is built around ancient stirrings, lands, and tolaria west and this card makes your stirrings worse, doesn't interact with your lands and doesn't interact with tolaria west at all. A 16/16 hasty Titan or maybe even a swarm of huge hornets sounds pretty game ending to me. Will it be played? Who knows, but it’s a Titan tutor, and making 12 mana to trigger that second clause is quite feasible. Yes on the stack the total cost of the spell reflects the cost you chose for X as you pay them at the same time, but in this case it's more useful IMO to think of the spell's cost as twice as much as GSZ since you're paying twice as much extra over the cost of the creature for it's effect.Īlso this card seems playable in amulet Titan. It's much the same way that chalice of the void costs zero and can be cast for zero, and you pay XX for each counter you want to put on it. You're paying GG for a spell that then lets you cast a creature from your library versus paying G for a spell that does the same. The reason X is considered zero in all zones other than the stack is because the X portion can be thought of as part of the spells effect, namely "pay G to cast this spell that lets you pay X to put a creature with converted mana cost X into play" versus "pay GG to cast this spell that lets you pay X to put a creature with converted mana cost X into play" being twice as much for the non X portion of the spell. Well it doesn’t cost twice as much, it costs 1 more firstly.ġ more than 1 is twice as much.
